DRUG RING SUSPECT ARRESTED

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department Special Response Team arrested a suspected drug trafficker who eluded arrest during the Feb. 25 round-up of 73 suspects.

Richard Contreras, 39, was arrested at 5812 La Reina St. Space 16 in northeast Las Cruces. The New Mexico State Police issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of trafficking a controlled substance. Contreras was a wanted suspect in connection to a local drug-ring investigation led by the Drug Enforcement Agency that resulted in 73 arrests on Feb. 25.

U.S. Customs Service played a supporting role in Contreras’ arrest by providing a helicopter air unit.

Contreras is being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center with a $20,000 secured bond.
