ONE MAN DETAINED AFTER CARJACKING

A Las Cruces man was arrested Monday in connection with an alleged Picacho Hills Country Club-area carjacking.

Sammy Sanchez, 20, of 1003 Hatfield, was arrested at highway marker 146 on Interstate Highway 10, reportedly driving a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban.

At about 2 p.m. March 3, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department responded to the 6700 block of Camino Blanco in the Picacho Hills Country Club residential area. A 71-year-old man told police a young man in a white Chevrolet pickup truck parked in front of his residence and approached the house. The youth entered the man’s garage asking for directions to the country club. During the course of the conversation, the youth allegedly pulled out a knife and took the keys to the senior’s 2001 Chevrolet Suburban. A passenger of the white pickup took over as driver and fled behind the Suburban.

The responding deputy called in the descriptions of the white pickup and the Suburban, and Sheriff’s investigators stationed themselves on Interstate Highway 10. The investigators spotted two vehicles matching the descriptions of the two suspect vehicles traveling eastbound toward El Paso. The driver of the Suburban immediately surrendered to the investigators. The white pickup fled, and the driver and possibly another occupant are being sought. The Third Judicial District Attoney's Office will decide what charges to file in the incident.
