CLERK’S OFFICE WORKS WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO CLARIFY DISTRICT CHANGES

Interim Doña Ana County Clerk J. Joe Martinez has announced a cooperative agreement with the Las Cruces, Hatch and Gadsden school districts by which voters in the upcoming Feb. 4 elections will receive clarification about redistricting and how it will affect individual voters.

Voter information cards sent out last August, prior to Martinez’s appointment as interim county clerk, failed to take into account redistricting in the three school districts. As a result, some voters’ cards contain incorrect information about the school district in which the voter is allowed to vote.

In the Hatch and Gadsden districts, the affected precincts were small enough that it was practical to issue corrected voter information cards, all of which will be mailed next week. In the Las Cruces Public School District, a much larger number of voter precincts were affected, causing Martinez to opt for a print advertising campaign designed to inform Las Cruces voters of how to properly identify their school district and vote accordingly.

“We have a relatively small window of time in which to educate the voters about this issue in the Las Cruces school district,” Martinez said. “Rather than try to rush out a new batch of 60,000 cards, we believe we have identified a print advertising campaign that will clearly and simply allow voters to check their precinct numbers against the school district number on their voter information card. If their card contains the wrong information, they’ll be able to spot it quickly and make the proper adjustment.”

Martinez said information also will be placed conspicuously at polling sites on Election Day to inform any voters who may have missed the ad campaign.

Martinez said the ads will appear twice each in the Las Cruces Sun-News and the Las Cruces Bulletin, beginning the week of Jan. 19, 2003. In the meantime, he said, any voter who is unsure of his or her school district placement may call the Doña Ana County Bureau of Elections at (505) 647-7428.
