EVENT CELEBRATES A DECADE OF MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH

Doña Ana County Commissioner Gilbert T. Apodaca and State Rep. Mary Helen Garcia are among the dignitaries who will be on hand Wednesday, Dec. 11, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the development and creation of the Doña Ana County Maternal Child Health Council. The event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Doña Ana County Public Health Complex at 1170 N. Solano, Room 1607. The public is invited to attend.

“Comprehensive county maternal and child-health plans are useful tools for community members to identify needs and resources,” Apodaca said. “On behalf of the County Commission, I want to commend Melanie Goodman and her staff, who have done an outstanding job locally to help county government better understand area health concerns, which has helped us to leverage support for activities to improve community health overall.”

Doña Ana County is one of 26 counties with approved Maternal and Child Health plans, each of which was designed by a locally appointed council. In Doña Ana County, the council includes representatives of area health care providers, business owners, parents and youth. The council works with community members and local and state governments to coordinate strategic efforts to improve the health of communities.

As part of its reason to celebrate a decade of service, the Doña Ana County Maternal Child Health Council has successfully advocated for increased services to families in areas ranging from parenting resource centers to culturally appropriate prenatal care.
