City and County will match dollar-for-dollar in rankings campaign

The Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners and the Las Cruces City Council have committed to match funds raised by a campaign committed to attracting economic development to the Las Cruces area.

The Ranked the Best Committee, a collaboration of public entities and representatives from the private sector, will move into the next phase of its campaign to capitalize on the 2002 rankings by the Forbes/Milken Institute and Money Magazine. Since Aug. 16 the committee has been raising funds from the private sector, and the City of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County have pledged to match the amount collected at the close of the fundraiser on Sept. 25.

Tom Hutchinson, committee chairman, said the next phase is developing an advertising campaign, based on market research, then hitting the ground running to put the marketing in place. Hutchinson said marketing Las Cruces to chief executive and financial officers will be most effective in attracting big business to the area.

The committee designated a week in August to focus on educating Las Crucens about the 2002 rankings by the Forbes/Milken Institute and Money Magazine. More local activities are planned for the Oct. 5 NMSU football game against UTEP.

Major entities involved in this initiative are the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance, Dona Ana County, the City of Las Cruces, New Mexico State University, the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce, the Las Cruces Convention and Visitors Bureau, the High Tech Consortium of Southern New Mexico, White Sands Missile Range, the Hispano Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces, Doña Ana County, the local offices of the New Mexico Congressional delegation, Wilson Binkley Advertising and Marketing, the Las Cruces Sun-News and the Bulletin.
