DOÑA ANA COUNTY ANNOUNCES GRAFFITI CLEAN-UP HOTLINE

Responding to an increasing problem of graffiti vandalism in Doña Ana County, the County Manager’s Office has instituted a graffiti clean-up hotline to which residents can report graffiti and request clean-up assistance.

The hotline number from within the Las Cruces calling area is 647-7117, and it will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with an answering machine in operation during non-business hours. Callers from outside the Las Cruces calling area may call toll-free to 1-877-827-7200 and request extension 7117, but this number will only be available during regular business hours.

Callers who use the hotline will be asked for the location(s) of the graffiti, as well as for any information that might be helpful to law enforcement in apprehending the vandals. A complaint log will be instituted so that the county can begin tracking the frequency and severity of recurring graffiti vandalism.

Although Doña Ana County will provide paint and supplies for covering over reported graffiti, the county will rely on volunteer crews to perform the repainting. A handful of interested residents and community service organizations already have come forward to offer their help, but more volunteers are needed. To volunteer, call the hotline during business hours.

Both public and private property will be eligible for county assistance in painting over graffiti. All assistance to private property owners will be coordinated through the county’s Keep America Beautiful grant. Public buildings and structures will be covered under the county’s Parks and Recreation budget. Coordination of all hotline calls, volunteer mobilization and graffiti removal will be handled by the county’s Environmental Department.

Doña Ana County Sheriff Juan Hernandez is cooperating fully with the anti-graffiti initiative and has procured field surveillance cameras for repeat targets. He said arrests will be made, and prosecutions will occur.

For more information, call county Public Information Director Jess Williams at (505) 647-7229. Residents calling from outside the Las Cruces area may call toll-free at 1-877-827-7200 and request extension 7229.
