MICHAEL GABANY TO TAKE OVER AS COUNTY FIRE MARSHAL

Michael Phillip Gabany has been hired by Doña Ana County Manager David R. King to take over the position of County Fire Marshal.

Gabany, whose first day at work will be June 10, 2002, comes to Doña Ana County from Bena, Va., where he has worked for 29 years with the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue, rising through the ranks to attain the position of Bureau Commander.

Gabany is a graduate of Hampton University with a bachelor’s degree in fire administration. He has training and certification in 27 specialty areas, including hazardous materials, emergency medical training, arson detection and open-water diving.

He replaces Interim Fire Marshal August Martin, who has held the post since the resignation of former Fire Marshal Adolf Zubia in August of 2001.

King said he was impressed by Gabany’s breadth of skills and his strong desire to serve the county.

“Michael Gabany’s experience in coordinating volunteer fire departments will be of enormous value to the county,” King said. “We are very fortunate to have located a candidate so ideally suited to the position. With the assistance of a quality staff and the 16 volunteer fire department chiefs, I’m certain he will make great strides toward educating and protecting the public.”

King also thanked Martin for filling in during the search for a new fire marshal. “Augie Martin gave us 110 percent every day as interim fire marshal,” King said. “Because of Augie’s commitment and expertise, we were able to conduct a thorough and exhaustive search for the best possible candidate. I very much appreciate Augie’s professionalism and the many long hours he put in for the residents of Doña Ana County.”
