DAC HIRES STEVE DECKER AS SENIOR DIRECTOR OF INFRASTRUCTURE/PUBLIC WORKS

Doña Ana County Manager David R. King has announced the appointment of Steven L. ‘Steve’ Decker as the new senior director for the Division of Infrastructure and Public Works.

Decker, whose first day on the job was Monday, April 22, 2002, will report directly to the county manager, and he will have direct supervision over four major county departments: Facilities and Parks; Water Utilities; Roads and Fleets; and Engineering and Technical Services.

The position of senior director for the Division of Infrastructure and Public Works is newly created as part of Doña Ana County’s restructuring initiative, which was approved by the Board of County Commissioners last October.

Under the restructuring, management of the county’s 12 service-oriented departments is divided between the overview of Assistant County Manager Mack Wilson (eight departments) and the senior director for the Division of Infrastructure and Public Works (four departments).

King predicted the new structure will enhance service to both internal and external users. He said Wilson and Decker are both highly qualified to oversee their respective departments and report to him on progress, challenges and areas of concern.

Decker comes to Doña Ana County from the City of Albuquerque, where he was the bicycle planner and right-of-way appraiser. His previous experience includes seven years with the Florida Department of Transportation, where he was the manager for safety programs and emergency operations.

He also worked 13 years for the Seminole County (Florida) Traffic Engineering Division, where he was the county’s traffic engineer.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a management certificate from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officers’ Leadership Academy.
