COUNTY HIRES SILVIA SIERRA AS HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES DIRECTOR

Silvia Sierra has been hired as Doña Ana County’s new director of Health and Human Services, overseeing indigent hospital claims, DWI prevention grants, South Central New Mexico Prevention Coalition and Maternal-Child Health Services.

A 32-year resident of New Mexico, Sierra comes to the county with a wealth of regional management experience in the fields of social programs and health-care. She has expertise in social services, health outreach, health promotion and education, and social and health issues related to indigent populations. She also is familiar with budgeting, programming, planning and evaluation.

Sierra holds a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and a bachelor’s degree in business management, both from New Mexico State University. She has held top-level positions at United Way of Southwest New Mexico, AVANCE of El Paso, La Clinica de la Familia and other area social service and health organizations. She also has a strong background of volunteer service to the social service and health communities.

County Manager David R. King said Sierra brings to the county “a skill set that will allow her to take the department and help it evolve into a more comprehensive and pro-active component of social services and health-care delivery in Doña Ana County.”

Sierra said she is grateful for the opportunity to enhance the county’s social service and health-care operations in partnership with other area agencies and entities.

“We have limited resources to work with and we must maximize the results we can derive from those resources,” she said. “By acting in concert with other agencies, we can establish linkages and networks that will ultimately make the most of every dollar that comes from both federal and state funding sources.”

Sierra’s office is located on the first floor of the Doña Ana County Health Services Building at 1170 N. Solano Ave. in Las Cruces.
