DAC ANIMAL CONTROL MOVES TO SHERIFF’S COMPLEX; ENFORCEMENT INVIGORATED

Doña Ana County Animal Control supervisor Victor Baldonado and his eight officers have begun reporting directly to the Sheriff’s Department, as of Feb. 10, 2002.

Under the supervision of Sheriff’s Capt. Robert Jones and Sgt. Sonny Garcia, Baldonado and his staff will now have direct support from Sheriff’s deputies who are empowered to serve warrants and assist in dangerous calls. All Animal Control vehicles have been linked by radio frequency to the DASO direct-dispatch number (505-526-0795) for speedier response to calls.

Jones said enforcement of animal-control matters in the county will be stepped up immediately.

“We will not be giving warnings as in the past,” he said. “If we see a violation of our county ordinance, we will be enforcing it, even if it’s a first offense. We’ll also be serving warrants to people who have failed to appear in court on citations, and we plan to involve the Animal Control officers in our community policing initiative. Theirs will be additional eyes and ears for our field deputies.”

Jones said animals found to be “constantly running loose” by deputies will be picked up by Animal Control and impounded. Owners who claim the animals will have to pay any applicable fees, including spay and neutering charges, otherwise the animal will be euthanized or adopted out to new owners.

The physical movement of DAC Animal Control from its present quarters in the DAC Animal Shelter to the Sheriff’s Office will free up space in the shelter that is expected to be converted to sorely needed additional kennel space. That move is expected to be completed by the end of February.

DAC Animal Control formerly reported to the county’s Environmental Services Department, which was a branch of the Transportation and Roads Department.
