COMMISSIONER CARLOS E. GARZA CLEARED IN TRAVEL INVESTIGATION

Doña Ana County Commissioner Carlos E. Garza, who represents District 1, was notified today that a three-month investigation into his travel reimbursements has been completed by the New Mexico State Police. Garza also was notified by the District Attorney’s office that there was no evidence to justify pursuing legal action against him.
Martinez released a statement Monday: “The District Attorney’s Office has carefully reviewed all of the documentation provided by the State Police and we find no evidence of any wrongdoing or criminal conduct.”
“This is a good day for me, obviously,” Garza said. “But it’s also a good day for the residents of District 1 and Doña Ana County as a whole. These kinds of distractions needlessly erode the public’s trust in their elected officials. Notwithstanding the time and attention that Chairman Gilbert Apodaca spent pursuing this matter, I have continued to focus on the needs of the county. This puts the matter to rest and confirms that all of my travel expenses and reimbursements were directly related to necessary county business.”
Garza expressed his appreciation to both the State Police and the Third Judicial District Attorney’s office for their professionalism and the relative speed with which they dispatched their duties.
“In a politically charged environment, these kinds of investigations can be turned into witch hunts. The professional manner in which this entire matter has been conducted gives me continued faith in the system of justice as it is practiced in this region,” Garza said.
