COUNTY EMPLOYEE SAVES LIFE OF TEEN WHO COLLAPSES AT COURTHOUSE

Quick thinking and decisive action on the part of a Doña Ana County Bureau of Elections employee is credited with saving the life of a 14-year-old girl who collapsed and stopped breathing Friday, June 22, in the County Courthouse.
Georgiana Medrano, a temporary office clerk in the Bureau of Elections, cleared away a crowd of well-meaning onlookers after Yvette Ramos collapsed. Medrano then performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest massage on Ramos until an ambulance crew arrived shortly before 4 p.m.
“It’s my opinion,” said Deputy County Clerk Judy Kelso, “that Ms. Medrano saved the life of Yvette Ramos. Ms. Medrano is a valuable asset to Doña Ana County and to humanity. She acted when no one else was capable, and she deserves both recognition and thanks.”
The girl’s mother, Rosalie Ramos, said her daughter suffers from a heart condition and likely would have died if not for Medrano’s quick thinking. Yvette Ramos was treated and released at Memorial Medical Center the same day that the incident occurred.
In a letter she delivered by hand Monday morning to County Clerk Ruben Ceballos, Rosalie Ramos expressed deep gratitude to the County Clerk’s office and to Medrano. In a hallway outside the foyer where her daughter collapsed, Rosalie Ramos hugged Medrano and called her “my lifesaver.”
“I cannot stress enough that if it was not for Ms. Medrano being in control and knowing what to do, our daughter might not have had the chance to be alive today,” Rosalie Ramos wrote. “[She] extended herself in providing a life-saving community service to our daughter that could never be repaid monetarily or with words.”
Medrano, who is being called a hero by other Courthouse employees, said she simply did what she had to do, and she would do it again “in a heartbeat” if the situation called for CPR.
