CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS WEEK CELEBRATED AT DETENTION CENTER

Correctional Officers Week is celebrated each year during the first full week of May. This year, the event is being observed May 6-12.
Correctional officers at the Doña Ana County Detention Center have been marking the week with several activities, including a kickoff picnic and different evening activities such as roller-skating, swimming and a night at the movies. Night shift personnel were treated to pizza dinners, while morning shifts received special breakfast meals. The detention center operates on 12-hour shifts.
In addition to the activities, the officers also voted collectively to bestow awards for excellence within the facility. The awards were issued as follows: Officer of the Year went to the late Cynthia Hammel, whose family accepted the award on her behalf; Professional Officer of the Year was Luis Campos; Rookie of the Year was Michael Caldwell; Lieutenant of the Year was Ken Wright; Sergeant of the Year was Danny Flores; and Civilian Employee of the Year was Nancy Ontiveros.
The officers hold fund-raisers throughout the year to pay for the events enjoyed during Correctional Officers Week. They also solicit assistance from area businesses. Businesses that participated this year include: Wal-Mart, Roberto’s, Sam’s, AraMark, Albertson’s, Southwest Cash and Carry and the Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Division.
