COUNTY COMMISSIONER PARTICIPATES IN ACAPULCO CHARITY ENDEAVOR

District 3 County Commissioner Paul B. Curry will spend the Easter weekend in Acapulco, Mexico, lending his support to a Las Cruces church group’s outreach to orphans.
For the past nine years, University Presbyterian Church (UPC) has been sending teams of young people and team leaders to minister at the Casa Hogar del Ninos de Acapulco Childrens Home in Acapulco. Casa Hogar is home to more than 80 children ranging in age from 5-21. Most of them come from the streets and have only known extreme poverty. Many have been abused.
The home’s former director, Dennis Keith and his wife, Karen, lead the team. Curry, his wife Mary and their children, Christina, Jared and Julianne, are assisting the Keiths. Other team members include Jayme Baas, Bill Chavez, Nellie Chavez, Maja Chavez, Tiffany Lightenburg, Melissa McDaniel, Laurel Tessier, Tassie Pickett and Simon Rawson, son of State Sen. Lee Rawson.
The team will meet up with Las Cruces resident Janine Black, who is working at Casa Hogar for a year, tutoring and mothering the children.
Curry said that, thanks to the generosity of Jude’s Footprints at 1024 S. Main St. in Las Cruces, the team will be taking 95 pairs of new shoes to the orphans. The shoes were donated by Yaleet (importers of NAOT shoes) and Birkenstock.
“Each child will be given his own pair, and this will be the first time many of these children have ever had a new pair of shoes. I can’t wait to see the smiles and surprise on their faces,” Curry said.
“One of the key purposes of this trip is to encourage the children to serve others, despite their tragic circumstances. This generous donation will not only provide the children with a much needed necessity, but it will also protect their feet while they work with the team to build a house for a single mother whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Paulina more than a year ago,” Dennis Keith said.
The team will be returning to Las Cruces Wednesday, April 18. For more information regarding the Acapulco Team 2001 and Casa Hogar del Ninos de Acapulco Childrens Home, contact University Presbyterian Church at (505) 522-0828.
