COUNTY PLANS PUBLIC AUCTION TO DISPOSE OF EXCESS PROPERTY

Doña Ana County will be thinning its inventory of fixed assets with an auction scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 at Dickerson’s Auction Barn in Las Cruces.
Mary Josselyn, the county’s director of purchasing, said periodic auctions represent the county’s most effective manner by which to liquidate excess assets under the provisions of state law. She predicted that items placed for sale will range from heavy construction equipment to household cleaning supplies – and just about everything in between.
“Bargain hunters who like the auction format will have a good time at this event,” Josselyn said. “We’ll be disposing of motor vehicles, office furniture, housekeeping supplies, construction equipment, computers and data-processing supplies, among other things.”
Every department in county government has been conducting inventories and identifying excess equipment since late October in preparation for the auction. At this point, Josselyn said, the Purchasing Department is coordinating the sales listings and preparing items for sale. Under state law, she said, every item placed on the auction block must be cleared from the county inventory and labeled for sale.
Each item will be placed on a condition-rating continuum that ranges from “New” to “Poor.” In addition, the auctioneer will be advised of each item’s new cost and estimated fair market value prior to the sale.
Delivery of items to the auction site already has begun and will continue in the weeks leading up to the event, Josselyn said.
“We have every confidence that this auction will be both productive for the county in terms of thinning excess inventory and valuable to the public in terms of the variety and value of the items placed on the block,” Josselyn said.
All revenues from the sale will be placed in the county’s general fund, where they will be distributed among the participating departments in the next budget cycle.
