TREASURER WARNS RESIDENTS OF PHONE SCAM OFFERING LOANS TO COVER TAXES

Doña Ana County Treasurer David Gutierrez said his office has received a number of calls this week from residents who have been contacted by an El Paso firm claiming to have a copy of delinquent Doña Ana County tax rolls and offering loans to residents so they can pay the delinquent taxes.
Gutierrez said he contacted the El Paso firm Wednesday morning, May 24, and ordered them to stop the practice. He said research within his office based on residents’ phone calls indicates that the people being targeted are not, in fact, delinquent in their taxes.
Gutierrez said any property owner who wishes to check his or her property-tax status may call the Treasurer’s Office at (505) 647-7433 or use the Internet to look up any individual property information by going to this address: http://www.co.dona-ana.nm.us/assr/search.html to search by name, address, parcel number, map code or subdivision.
The Treasurer’s Office does not, Gutierrez said, release delinquent-tax rolls to for-profit entities or loan makers. Calls from any such entity or individual should be reported to the Treasurer’s Office, but otherwise ignored by property owners.
