GRAND OPENING FOR RADIUM SPRINGS COMMUNITY CENTER SET FOR 5-20-00

RADIUM SPRINGS – On Saturday, May 20, Doña Ana County Commissioner Gilbert T. Apodaca will preside over the grand opening ceremony for the new Radium Springs Community Center. The ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a parade from the Radium Springs Fire Station to the Community Center.
The Robledo Community Association – whose members will take over the administrative duties, with support from the county, at the center upon its completion – will be on hand for the ceremony.
The association members, Apodaca said, “concerned themselves with every detail of the proposal until all parties were satisfied that this center would provide the greatest benefit for every sector of the community it is designed to serve. They also have made plans for the future expansion of the center and the grounds to better serve the community as funds become available.”
The 5,838-square-foot center was designed by the architectural firm of Molzen-Corbin and Associates to accommodate the diverse demographics of the community. It sports a half-court indoor basketball area that will double as a full-court volleyball area and also can be used for bingo games, community gatherings and card tournaments.
Apodaca said the project contractor, American Southwest Contractors of Las Cruces, brought the project in exactly on schedule.
“This will be a place for the children and youth of the community to gather, as well as for the adults and the elders,” Apodaca said. “Truly, it will be the most state-of-the-art community center in the southern part of the state.”
Funding for the project came from three sources: the Community Development Council put in $300,000; Doña Ana County provided matching funds in the amount of $190,000; and Sen. Mary Jane Garcia secured a Legislative appropriation of $150,000.
Apodaca said the four acres of land on which the community center is located were formerly owned by the L.B. Lindbeck family, whose members have strong ties to the Radium Springs area and who will be present for Saturday’s grand opening ceremonies..
The official ceremony will begin at 2 p.m., following the parade, at the center site off Fort Selden Road. Directional signs will be posted near the Radium Springs exit leading from Interstate 25, as well as near the Fort Selden Road exit off State Road 185.
