NOTICES OF PROPERTY VALUATIONS TO BE MAILED OUT BEGINNING JAN. 10, 2000

The Doña Ana County Assessor’s office will begin mailing approximately 76,000 notices of property valuation on Monday Jan. 10, 2000.
Most property owners will see no movement in valuation from 1999 levels. The only exceptions will be property owners who have made changes to their properties, such as an addition or some type of new construction.
The deadline for protesting assessed values is Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, for those property owners who don't agree with their valuations.
“We anticipate fewer protests this year, because we have not raised or changed values since last year, and because the 1999 tax rate was lower than the 1998 tax rate,” County Assessor Emma Johnson Ortiz said.
The deadline for applying for head-of-family exemptions and veterans’ exemptions is March 13, 2000. Property owners who apply for veterans exemptions must bring in a certificate of eligibility issued by the Veterans’ Service Commission.
March 13, 2000 also is the deadline for non-profit groups – such as church groups and other charitable
organizations – who want to be considered tax exempt. Applications for exemption can be picked up at the Assessor’s Office in Room 106 of the Doña Ana County Courthouse, located at 251 W. Amador Ave. in Las Cruces.
Property owners who have recently moved or have changed their mailing addresses are encouraged to report the change promptly to the Assessor's Office.
In an effort to be responsive to rural communities, the Assessor’s Office also has scheduled four outreach dates to assist property owners who have questions or concerns about their valuation notices, or who want to apply for exemptions. Each outreach session will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as follows:
* HATCH – Jan. 24, 2000: Board of Education Conference Room at 403 N. Main St.
* SUNLAND PARK – Jan. 25, 2000: City Council Chambers at 1000 McNutt St.
* ANTHONY – Jan. 26, 2000: South Valley Complex.
* CHAPARRAL – Jan. 27, 2000: Chaparral Health Clinic.
