COMMISSION CHAIRMAN TO SPEAK AT GRANT-AWARD CEREMONY IN CAÑUTILLO

Doña Ana County Commission Chairman Gilbert T. Apodaca will be among the featured speakers Monday, Nov. 22, as Doña Ana County is awarded a $100,000 drug abuse prevention and education grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Also on hand to speak will be U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman and representatives from the Texas legislature and El Paso city and county government. They will be joined by officials from the Cañutillo Independent School District and the West Texas Council on Prevention, both of which also received prevention grants from the federal government.

Apodaca said the focus of the ceremony will be on the three grant-receiving agencies’ resolution to work together toward a wide-ranging border initiative to educate children about the dangers of drugs.

“This money will be used in Doña Ana County and the Las Cruces/El Paso corridor for a comprehensive prevention program aimed at our kids,” Apodaca said. “The grants are part of an $18.5 million federal initiative.”

The acceptance ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, at Bill Childress Elementary School on Cap Carter Road in Cañutillo.
