BORDER COUNTIES COALITION PRESS CONFERENCE SET AT 11:30 A.M., JUNE 12

The U.S./Mexico Border Counties Coalition has scheduled a press conference for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at the Las Cruces Hilton.

The press conference will cap the 24-county coalition’s June 11-12 meeting that got underway today at the hotel, with introductory remarks by County Commissioner Carlos Garza and Las Cruces Mayor Ruben Smith. Items that will be highlighted during the press conference are scheduled to include:

* A recap of significant achievements that the coalition has realized in the past 10 months, including: re-establishment of the Southwest Border Congressional Caucus; Renewed White House and Congressional focus on the Southwest border region; newly obtained Congressional support for the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP); Legislation expanding SCAAP to include other related law-enforcement and health care costs associated with undocumented immigrants, including juveniles; and funding that has been secured to develop a uniform accounting protocol for border counties.

*A lobbying plan designed to address the coalition’s short-term and long-term goals for increased attention to and funding for border-related issues.

* A recap of highlights from the two-day conference, including updates on alliances with other entities whose collective focuses are border issues.

* Updates on the ongoing development of a coalition action/response team.

* Announcement of the next meeting location, time and date.

The press conference is open to the public, as well as members of the media.
