INMATE’S WOUNDS DESCRIBED AS ‘SUPERFICIAL’; INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

A Doña Ana County Detention Center inmate who reported being stabbed Sunday morning, April 25, is back in custody at the detention center.

Detention Center Administrator Jeff Garbow said the inmate’s wounds were “very superficial,” as decribed by staff at the detention center and at Memorial Medical Center.” The inmate was returned to the detention center shortly after being evaluated by the medical staff at Memorial Medical Center.

Garbow said that whenever an inmate alleges he has been attacked, the policy is to notify Las Cruces Police, who normally perform a separate investigation.

Garbow said an investigation into the incident revelealed no weapons in the booking area, where the inmate was housed at the time of the alleged attack. Other inmates questioned in the incident denied any knowledge of any attack. Garbow said the investigation is continuing, and he did not rule out the possibility that the inmate might have inflicted the wounds upon himself.
