DOÑA ANA COUNTY’S SOLID-WASTE PROGRAM EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has bestowed its equivalent to an Academy Award for technical achievement to Doña Ana County’s South Central Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Facility.
The Doña Ana County facility received a Bronze Award for excellence based on its creative design, its comprehensive approach and its forward-looking capacity for growth.
The judges’ remarks were as follows:
“As with many communities in the 1990s, the Las Cruces area was faced with closing landfills and greater haul distances. This challenged the community to develop regional, integrated plans.
“The integrated regional solution involved identifying one ideal landfill to serve both city and county residents. All waste would be processed through a new, central transfer station with materials-recovery capabilities.
