DOÑA ANA COUNTY MANAGER CALLS SEGURA’S CLAIMS ‘RIDICULOUS, LIBELOUS’

The following opinion statement is Doña Ana County Manager Fernando Macias’ response to the allegations made by Sunland Park Mayor Jesus Segura in a press conference held today in Las Cruces:

“Mayor Jesus Segura of Sunland Park is understandably relieved to have the criminal charges against him dismissed as a result of a deal he apparently struck with Assistant District Attorney Cannon Stevens of Otero County. As of today, that agreement has not been filed with the court. Mayor Segura’s characterization of his arrest -- which he provoked and upon which the charges against him were based -- as a personal or political vendetta by me is completely false. Mayor Segura, on the advice of his attorney, actively sought to obstruct a law-enforcement officer in the course of the officer’s duties. In that regard, he brought this matter completely on himself. I neither ordered his arrest nor took part in his subsequent prosecution. Those matters were handled independently by law enforcement personnel and the office of the Otero County District Attorney. Had Mayor Segura not actively sought to enter into a deal, I remain confident that the charges against him would have been successfully prosecuted. There was no “power play” on the part of Doña Ana County or any of its agents or officers against Mayor Segura. The fact is: He obstructed an officer, was arrested for doing so and begged for a deal when his trial was imminent. His personal attack against me is both ridiculous and libelous, and it shows the continued level of immaturity with which Mayor Segura has handled this entire affair. I extend my sympathies to the residents of Sunland Park for having to put up with such bizarre and arrogant behavior from their mayor.”
