COUNTY COMMENTS ON PLEA PROPOSAL in STATE v. SEGURA

STATEMENT TO THE MEDIA
RE: PLEA PROPOSAL in STATE v. SEGURA

Doña Ana County has been informed of a plea-agreement proposal submitted by Sunland Park Mayor Jesus Segura’s attorneys and being negotiated in the criminal case pending against Segura in a matter assigned by Third Judicial District Attorney Susanna Martinez to the 12th Judicial District Court. As of today, Doña Ana County is precluded from divulging the terms of the proposal or confirming whether the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s office has accepted the terms of Segura’s plea proposal. The County can confirm that there is no financial component to the plea proposal. Other than that, Doña Ana County has no position relative to any agreement other than a strong feeling that the case against Mayor Segura could be successfully prosecuted on the charge of obstruction of a law enforcement officer. While the County believes that Mayor Segura owes the arresting officers and the citizens of Doña Ana County a public apology, we recognize that the disposition of the case lies in the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which is handling this case as a special prosecutor outside the Third Judicial District, where the criminal charges against Mayor Segura originated.
