Doña Ana County Clerk and New Mexico State Men’s Basketball Team Up for National Voter Registration Day Event

LAS CRUCES, NM – On September 22, 2020, Americans celebrated National Voter Registration Day with a massive cross-country push to register voters well in advance of Election Day this November. Doña Ana County Clerk Amanda López Askin commemorated this effort by promoting registration through the clerk’s office’s social media channels and by facilitating a small registration event for the New Mexico State men’s basketball team.

On Tuesday, players registered or updated their voter registration status while observing best practices for health safety related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We know that voters between the ages of 18-25 years old often do not turnout as much as voters who belong to other age groups,” said Clerk Askin. “As a three-time Aggie graduate, I am so pleased to have had this opportunity to punctuate how young voters may ensure they are ready to participate in the election this year.”

Founded in 2012, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right – the right to vote. Nearly 3 million Americans have registered to vote on the holiday since the inaugural National Voter Registration Day in 2012.

To make voter registration updates, apply for an absentee ballot, or check the status of an absentee ballot application, New Mexican voters may visit NMVote.org.

The deadline to register online or by paper form for the 2020 general election in New Mexico is October 6, and in Doña Ana County, in-person registration immediately prior to voting will be available at all eight early voting locations.

Information about voting locations and important election dates can be found on the Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office’s election website, dacelections.com.
