The Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department, in conjunction with the Village of Hatch and the Hatch Volunteer Fire Department, is evacuating some residents from areas experiencing heavy flooding.
The Doña Ana County Emergency Operations Center is on standby alert, and can be activated on short notice in the event of flooding associated with storms that are expected to move through the area today and for the rest of the week.
The Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners is accepting applications and reviewing resumes of people interested in serving on a new Investment Advisory Committee.
Doña Ana County will restrict sandbag distribution to residents whose physical property is threatened by floodwaters. Some residents have been using sandbags to protect yards and gardens.
Flood plain experts have assured the Doña Ana County Emergency Operations Center that Doña Ana County residents would be unaffected in the event an earthen dam in Juarez were to rupture or fail. Topographical scenarios show the released water would likely move into El Paso County, with minimal effect to the City of Sunland Park or the colonia of Anapra. The computer models show most water flow would travel southeast of populated areas in Doña Ana County.
Overnight rainfall and runoff has created some bodies of standing water in and around the southern Doña Ana County community of Chaparral, possibly leaving some residents stranded. No reports of serious residential or commercial flooding have been received.
Doña Ana County is conducting damage assessments associated with Tuesday’s flooding in several south-county communities. Assessments are being conducted by helicopter and on the ground.
