Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators arrested a 25-year-old Las Cruces man Tuesday, and charged him with intentional child abuse after a toddler in his care was taken to the hospital with severe burns all over her body.

According to a report filed in Magistrate Court, sheriff’s investigators were called to Mountain View Medical Center on April 28 after a two-year-old girl was brought in with second- and third-degree burns to her hands, arms, face, right leg and feet.

She was later flown to the burn unit at University Medical Center in Lubbock.

The girl had been in the care of her mother’s live-in boyfriend, Pedro Carreras, who told investigators he put the girl in the bathtub at his home in the 9300 block of Bataan Memorial West around 2:30 p.m. on April 28 and left her alone with the water running.

The baby’s mother was reportedly at work during the time of the incident.

During questioning, Carreras reportedly changed his story several times, first saying he left the toddler to answer the phone, then to play a game on his computer, and again when he said he put water over the baby’s head to “help her get used to it.”

According to the report, Carreras never called 911 but instead notified the girl’s mother at work, who later took the girl to the hospital for treatment.

During the investigation, it was also discovered that the baby had sustained severe bruising on her buttocks from what the report says was alleged spanking with an open hand.

Carreras faces charges of intentional child abuse resulting in great bodily harm and intentional child abuse without great bodily harm.

He is currently at the Doña Ana County Detention Center on a $15,000 cash-only bond.
