Doña Ana County

Doña Ana County Treasurer David Gutierrez is reminding property owners that they have until May 10 to pay their second-half property taxes before state-mandated interest and penalties begin to accumulate.

In an effort to make the payment process as convenient as possible, Gutierrez said he has implemented a number of ways for property owners to remit payment: 1) Mail your payment to the Treasurer’s Office using the self-addressed envelope provided with the tax notice; 2) Take a check or money order to any of the 10 Wells Fargo Bank branches, located from Sunland Park to Hatch; 3) Pay in person at the Treasurer’s Office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 845 N. Motel Blvd., in Las Cruces; or 4) Use the drop box inside the Doña Ana County Government Center, adjacent to the Treasurer’s Office teller windows.

“We make every effort to notify every property owner of their tax obligations,” Gutierrez said. “We already have sent out more than 39,500 second-half reminders. If you haven’t paid your property taxes, please don’t miss the May 10 deadline. We urge all property owners to avoid state-mandated penalties and interest by making arrangements to pay their property taxes on time.”

Property owners with mortgages will, in nearly all cases, have their property taxes paid by the escrow holder. The Treasurer’s office no longer mails duplicate tax bills to property owners and their escrow companies, saving more than $8,000 in taxpayer dollars. That practice led to widespread confusion and overpayment of property taxes, Gutierrez said, adding that property owners can contact his office at (575) 647-7433 to update escrow records or seek information and assistance.

Property owners who have not paid their taxes in full and have not yet received reminders should immediately contact the Treasurer’s Office, he said.
