Doña Ana County

For the second consecutive year, Doña Ana County employees have opened their wallets and hearts to bring holiday cheer to some of the area’s poorest families.
Nearly 300 county employees representing all the county’s departments have contributed to the 2005 Colonias Toy Drive.

More than 350 children from the communities of Chaparral, Anthony, Del Cerro, Organ, Doña Ana, Radium Springs and Rincon will receive individual gifts. Some employees purchased bigger presents – including bicycles – which will be raffled off during gift events at the community centers, thereby giving each child an opportunity to win bigger gifts.

“It’s really satisfying to help the kids in the colonias,” said Loida Castañeda of Doña Ana County’s Health and Human Services Department. “We love to see those happy faces, and to give a hand to those who need it the most.”

In addition to donating gifts, employees came together on Nov. 21 and 22 to wrap the donated presents.

“The teamwork was great,” exclaimed Health and Human Services Department employee Martha Carrasco. “Everyone was really excited to help.”

The children also will receive bags of soft candy with their presents. AmeriCorps Vista volunteers from centers located throughout Doña Ana County assisted in filling candy bags for the giveaways.

Distribution of the presents will begin in Anthony on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 3 p.m. and will continue with six more events throughout the next week in the respective colonias, finishing with Organ on Saturday, Dec. 10.

“These are really neat events to attend,” Carrasco said. “It really makes you feel good to see all those smiles.”
