Doña Ana County

The Doña Ana County Special Deputy Sheriff Commission, a group of volunteers dedicated to supporting law enforcement in Doña Ana County, has announced a new program to honor sheriff’s deputies who have demonstrated the highest levels of integrity and achievement in the field.

The event will be held Thursday. Nov. 11, 2004 in the banquet suite of the Hilton Hotel of Las Cruces. A cash bar will open at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the awards presentations at 7 p.m. Tickets to the event are $30 each.

The Doña Ana County Special Deputy Sheriff Commission’s mission is “to support the functions
of the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department and to provide citizen input to the sheriff on a wide range of issues related to law enforcement in the county.”

Only field deputies were eligible for nomination to receive the awards, based on criteria including actions above and beyond the call of duty.

Commission President Coralie Carrier said the commission members particularly sought to honor deputies who exemplify the highest degree of professionalism when dealing with the community while performing highly stressful situations. The commission also seeks to recognize deputies who have been active in their communities by working to enhance community relations between the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department and the community. They also targeted deputies who have solved a multitude of cases or who have shown exceptional determination in an assigned case that lead to the apprehension and conviction in a serious felony matter.

All departments of DASO were asked to submit candidates for the awards, Carrier said, and the department’s lieutenants and captains made the final selections.

At the Nov. 11 event, the following deputies will be recognized: Alan Franzoy of the Community Policing Division; Trey Gimler (and his dog, Hutch) of the K-9 Division; Armando Gonzales of the Special Response Team; James Hash and Manny Maynes and Tammy Van Valkenburg of the Patrol Division; Chris Merrill of the Legal Division; John Ordoñez of the Criminal Investigations Division; and Tim Sherman of the Traffic Division.
