Local fire departments adjust station numbers to improve emergency coordination

Post Date:11/05/2024 9:17 AM

Doña Ana County, NM – Fire departments in Doña Ana County, including the City of Las Cruces Fire Department, are changing their station numbers to improve coordination during emergencies. This update is part of a mutual aid agreement previously signed by these departments, with support from the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority (MVRDA), to make it easier for emergency responders to work together.

Previously, both the City of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County used similar station numbers, which could cause confusion when multiple departments were at the same emergency. The new system assigns unique number ranges based on location.

Below is the new breakdown for Doña Ana County fire stations:

1-29-stations 30-39-stations 40-49-stations 50-59-stations
7 - Moongate 30 - Radium Springs 40 - Mesquite 54 - Santa Teresa
10 - Organ 31 - Rincon 41 - La Mesa 55 - County Jetport
11 - Doña Ana 33 - Garfield 42 - Anthony 56 - La Union
12 - Fairacres 43 - Chamberino
13 - San Pablo 44 - Chaparral
15 - Las Alturas
16 - Talavera
17 - NMSU

“This change is part of our mutual aid agreement,” Doña Ana County Fire Chief Shannon Cherry said. “It allows us to know exactly where each unit is coming from, which helps us work together better and respond faster."

With these new numbers, firefighters will also have an easier time locating emergencies. For example, hearing a "40" series number means the unit is coming from the South Region, allowing teams to act quickly and move in the right direction.

The updated system went into effect on November 1, and all fire personnel are being trained on the new set-up to ensure a smooth transition. The change in the system will not require residents to do anything and will not change their access to emergency services.
