The opioid epidemic has caused an increase in overdose deaths and hospitalizations across the U.S., driven by the use of both prescription and illicit drugs. Doña Ana County, like many other regions, has been affected by this crisis. 

Between 2017 and 2021, Doña Ana County recorded the 3rd highest number of drug overdose deaths among New Mexico counties. In an effort to decrease this number, Doña Ana County launched health initiatives such as the Substance Use Prevention and Naloxone Training programs. This initiative provides free training and resources for residents to prevent overdoses and administer naloxone, a life-saving medication that reverses opioid overdoses. 

Over the next 15 years, Doña Ana County, the City of Las Cruces, and the City of Sunland Park will receive approximately $25 million as part of a statewide opioid settlement.
