VOTER REGISTRATION STATUS POSTCARDS

August 26, 2024

 Over the past several days, the Doña Ana County Clerk's office has received calls and emails from concerned residents who received a postcard in the mail about their voter registration status. The Doña Ana County Clerk's office did not send the postcards. They were sent and paid for by an entity unrelated to the Doña Ana County Clerk's office.

Residents who are worried about their status can go to NMVOTE.ORG to verify their registration status and make any needed changes. Constituents can also call our office at 575-647-7428 to have a staff member check on their registration status.

 

DOÑA ANA COUNTY PRECINCTS SELECTED IN POST-ELECTION SYSTEM CHECK 

June 27, 2024

LAS CRUCES, NM – Two precincts in Doña Ana County were chosen at random by the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office for a mandatory post-election system review. The Doña Ana County Clerk’s office is scheduled to begin the system check on Monday, July 1st, 2024, at 9:00 am at 2480 Lakeside Dr., Las Cruces, NM.

The Precincts selected for the post-election system check include precincts 14 and 59 for the Libertarian U.S. Presidential race.

Under 1-14-13.2 NMSA, For each selected office, the auditor shall publicly select a random sample of precincts from a pool of all precincts in the state no later than twelve days after the election. The random sample shall be chosen in a process that will ensure, with at least ninety percent probability for the selected offices, that faulty tabulators would be detected if they would change the outcome of the election for a selected office.”

"All New Mexicans should be proud of the checks and balances in New Mexico elections, highlighting the fair, transparent, and secure process from early voting to statewide certification.,” Said Doña Ana County Clerk, Amanda López Askin.

The Clerk’s Office is required to submit results by July 15, 2024, to the State Auditor.

DOÑA ANA COUNTY CLERK’S OFFICE ANNOUNCES 15% TURNOUT FOR
THE 2024 PRIMARY ELECTION 

June 05, 2024 

LAS CRUCES, NM – Approximately 15.58% or 14,770 ballots were cast by eligible voters in Doña Ana County for the 2024 Primary Election on June 4th. This turnout was less than the previous Primary Election in 2022, which saw 16.41% or 15,499 ballots cast. The turnout for the 2024 Primary Election was also less than the 2020 Primary Election, which saw 29.29% or 26,055 ballots cast.

“We typically see lower turnout in Primary Elections because only voters registered with a major party are eligible to vote. However, we expect to see higher turnout for the General Election when all eligible voters can vote. I would like to commend our Clerk's Office Team for their hard work and dedication to running fair and transparent elections. I also want to thank the over 300 community members who serve as election officials for their care and commitment to preserving our democracy. Said Caroline Zamora, Chief Deputy County Clerk.

These results are unofficial and remain unofficial results until the Secretary of State’s canvass has been completed and certified.

Per NMSA 1-13-4, The County Clerk’s Office must present the report of the canvass to the county canvassing board for the board's consideration and approval. Results are scheduled to be certified by the Board of County Commissioners on June 14th and then by the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office later in June.

All Voting Convenience Centers were staffed according to statute, and most were overstaffed. Over 300 election officials served during early voting and Election Day. Approximately 40 of those election officials were young people between the ages of 16-18. "We love seeing young people ready
to serve their community as election officials. They are seeing how elections and democracy happen firsthand. They are also likely to serve as election officials again and become lifelong voters." Said Caroline Zamora, Chief Deputy Clerk.

  DOÑA ANA COUNTY CLERK’S OFFICE ANNOUNCES EARLY VOTING NUMBERS

LAS CRUCES, NM – Early voting has ended while preparations are underway for the 2024 Primary Election. Saturday, June 1st was the last day to vote early for the Primary Election. Unofficial participation numbers up to this point reflect approximately 5,501 early ballots cast and 1,972 absentee ballots cast. As of Monday morning, 7.9% of eligible voters have cast their ballot in Doña Ana County.

The last chance to vote for the 2024 Primary Election will be on Election Day on June 4th. 42 locations will be open throughout Doña Ana County. For a full list of all Voting Convenience Centers throughout Doña Ana, visit DACElections.com.

Registered voters who have applied for absentee voting are still able to return their absentee ballot at any of the 9 available Secured Container Locations throughout the county, as well as at any of the Voting Convenience Centers on Election Day. For a list of Secured Container Locations, visit DACElections.com. Voters may track the status of their absentee ballot online at NMVote.org.

Unofficial results for this year’s election will be available after 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, June 4th, on the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website: https://www.sos.nm.gov/election-results-2024/ . All results remain unofficial until the state certification the end of June.

 DOÑA ANA COUNTY TO BREAK GROUND ON NEW ELECTIONS WAREHOUSE

LAS CRUCES, NM- The Doña Ana County Clerk's Office announced on Monday that a groundbreaking ceremony will be held for the new Bureau of Elections warehouse on Thursday, May 23rd, 2024, at 10 AM at 2821 Las Vegas Ct. Las Cruces, NM 88007.

The warehouse will replace the current warehouse located on Lakeside Dr. Las Cruces, NM 88007. The more than 14,000 square-foot building will include dedicated spaces for storing voting machines, ballot boxes, and other election supplies to ensure efficiency and organization. It is expected to enhance the overall operations of the Doña Ana County Clerk's Office and contribute to the smooth execution of future elections in the county.

“This endeavor has been in the works for more than three years. I cannot express the excitement and energy that this groundbreaking brings to our office and the county. Having our legislators fully support us underscores their belief in our office, the Bureau of Elections, and Doña Ana County. We greatly appreciate everyone who has contributed their time and effort to this project.” said Amanda López Askin, County Clerk.

The groundbreaking event will include Doña Ana County Clerk Dr. Amanda López Askin, Interim County Manager Stephen Lopez, Assistant County Managers, and several County elected officials. Other special guests will include Senator Bill Soules and Representative Doreen Gallegos, who were instrumental in the advancement of this initiative.

THIRTY-EIGHT CANDIDATES FILE FOR THE 2024 PRIMARY ELECTION ON FILING DAY

LAS CRUCES, NM- A total of thirty-eight major-party candidates submitted their declarations to run for their respective offices for the 2024 Primary Election on Tuesday, March 12th, at the Doña Ana County Government Center. As per NM Stat 1-8-26, declarations of candidacy for any office up for nomination in the primary election, other than those declared by preprimary convention designation, must be filed with the appropriate filing officer on the second Tuesday of March in every even-numbered year between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Candidates who filed will be notified in writing that they have qualified to be on the ballot by March 19th. NM Stat 1-8-26 (D) requires these qualification letters to be mailed no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Tuesday following the filing date.

29 COUPLES TIE THE KNOT AT THE DOÑA ANA COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER

February 15, 2024 

LAS CRUCES, NM – A total of 29 couples tied the knot during the Doña Ana County Clerk’s annual event, “Romance at the Rotunda” on Valentine’s Day at the Doña Ana County Government Center building. The Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office and the Doña Ana County Probate Judge’s Office partnered to perform the ceremonies on Wednesday, February 14th.
Chief Deputy County Clerk Caroline Zamora, Deputy Clerk Brandi Delgado and Probate Judge Judith Ann Baca officiated the marriages. Several weddings took place concurrently in the building’s Rotunda. Family, friends, and passersby at the Government Center had the opportunity to witness the ceremonies and capture memorable moments through photographs. Some passersby also participated as last-minute witnesses in the marriage ceremonies. Couples wishing to be married applied for their marriage license before February 14th on the County Clerk’s website, then scheduled their ceremony. After couples tied the knot, they turned in signed marriage licenses for recording and filing by the Doña Ana Clerk’s Office Staff. After their ceremony, the couples enjoyed some treats and had the chance to take photos at the Government Center. "At our office, we are a small part of critical moments in an individual's life, and this includes marriage and obtaining a marriage license. Our Romance at the Rotunda event is such a joy. Sharing the experience with loving couples and families is lovely and one of my favorite days of the year. I want to thank our Clerk's Office staff for their work to make this event a success. We have a wonderful and talented team at the Clerk's Office,” said Caroline Zamora, Chief Deputy County Clerk.

Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office and Doña Ana County Probate Judge’s Office to perform marriages on Valentine’s Day

LAS CRUCES – The Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office and the Doña Ana County Probate Judge’s Office announced on Monday that their offices are collaborating once again for “Romance at the Rotunda”. The event will take place Wednesday, February 14th, Valentine's Day, at the Doña Ana County Government Center.
Both offices take pride in conducting the public service of performing marriages and recording marriage licenses. Officiants for the event include Probate Judge Judith Ann Baca, Chief Deputy County Clerk Caroline Zamora, and Deputy Clerk Brandi Delgado.

For couples wishing to get married that day, here are the steps you need to take before February 14.

Step 1: Complete the Online Marriage Application at https://donaana.nm.publicsearch.us/. Click on the drop-down arrow at the top of the page that reads ‘Other Services’ and select ‘Apply for Marriage License’. After completing the application, you’ll receive a transaction number. Keep this number. Please note marriage licenses are issued by appointment only. Appointments are filling up quickly, so please complete this step as soon as possible. Couples getting married on February 14th but not participating in the Romance at the Rotunda event must also make an appointment to acquire a marriage license before their ceremony.

Step 2: Call the Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office at 575-647-7421 to schedule an appointment to complete the application process. To participate in the Romance at the Rotunda event, you will schedule a ceremony time slot in addition to scheduling the marriage application appointment. Give the Clerk the transaction number from Step 1 above.

Step 3: Both applicants must attend the appointment in person at the Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office to finalize the marriage application. Applicants must bring their ID to the appointment.

Step 4: On Wednesday, February 14th arrive 30 minutes before your ceremony to check in. Check-in will be in front of the Doña Ana County Clerk’s office located on the right side of the government building.

Step 5: Ceremony

Step 6: After the ceremony, return the Signed Marriage License to the check-in table for recording and filing by the Doña Ana Clerk’s Office Staff.

Couples wishing to get married on Valentine’s Day must have a marriage license prior to their ceremony. Spanish ceremonies are also available upon request.

Doña Ana County Clerk's Office Announces Recount for Two Races

November 30, 2023

Las Cruces-  The Doña Ana County Clerk’s office on Wednesday announced that two races from the November 7th, 2023 Regular Local Election will result in a recount. The announcement follows the State’s Board of Canvass meeting that took place on Tuesday, November 28th, when the results were certified.

The Las Cruces Public School District 5 race is eligible for a recount after the race resulted in a margin of 0.75 percent during the 2023 Regular Local Election.

The race for the Hatch Valley School Board Member-at-large will also be eligible for recount after that race resulted in a margin of 0.78 percent during the Regular Local Election

The recounts will commence on Monday, December 4th, 2023 at 9am at the Bureau of Elections warehouse located at 2480 Lakeside Dr. Las Cruces, NM 88007.

Doña Ana Clerk’s Office Announces  18% Turnout for the 2023 Regular Local Election

November 8, 2023

LAS CRUCES, NM – Voter turnout for the 2023 Regular Local Election in Doña Ana County was approximately 18.3%, or 22,389 voters. This is higher than the turnout for the last municipal election in 2021, which had approximately 11.8%, or 14,440 voters, County Clerk Amanda López Askin announced Wednesday. 

"We are very pleased with the stronger voter turnout. Our office is always working on engaging voters, and we hope that the upward trend in voter turnout will reinforce the importance of regular local elections," said County Clerk Amanda López Askin.

Election Board to adjourn for Tuesday Night, Count to continue Wednesday Morning 

November, 9th 2023

LAS CRUCES, NM – Doña Ana County Clerk, Dr. Amanda López Askin has announced that the Election Board will adjourn for the night and will reconvene Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., as required by new election statute. Approximately 20 Ranked Choice Voting Ballots remain to be tabulated. Due to the public’s interest in the results of the specific City of Las Cruces ranked-choice voting races, our office has completed the RCV tabulation and transmitted those results to the Secretary of State. The remaining ballots will be processed and tabulated on Wednesday.  

According to NMSA 1-6-14-K: “On election night, the absent voter election board shall recess upon the earlier of completion of its work or 11:00 p.m. An absent voter election board that recesses at 11:00 p.m. shall continue its work only between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on each subsequent day until the board has completed its work.”

Doña Ana County Clerk Announces Early Voting Numbers

LAS CRUCES, NM – Early voting has ended while preparations are underway for the 2023 Regular Local Election on Tuesday, November 7. Saturday was the last day to vote early for the Regular Local Election. Unofficial participation numbers up to this point reflect approximately 7,807 early voters and 2,391 absentee voters.
“I am encouraged with the number of early voters in Doña Ana County and am hopeful these numbers are an indication that we will have a high turnout on Election Day as well,” Said Doña Ana County Clerk, Dr. Amanda López Askin. Registered voters who have applied for absentee voting are still able to submit their absentee ballot at any of the available secured container locations throughout the county, as well as at any of the Voting Convenience Centers on Election Day. Voters may track the status of their absentee ballot online at NMVote.org. During the last Regular Local Election in 2021, approximately 5,271 voters cast ballots in person during the Early Voting period in Doña Ana County. Unofficial results for this year’s election will be available after 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 7, on the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website. https://electionresults.sos.state.nm.us/resultsSW.aspx?type=CTYALL&map=CTY&cty=07&name=Do%C3%B1a%20Ana .   Doña Ana County Clerk Announces Changes to Election Night Procedures

November 2, 2023

The Doña Ana County Clerk’s office on Thursday announced changes to some Election Night procedures following new statutory law.  

According to NMSA 1-6-14-K: “On election night, the absent voter election board shall recess upon the earlier of completion of its work or 11:00 p.m. An absent voter election board that recesses at 11:00 p.m. shall continue its work only between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on each subsequent day until the board has completed its work.”  The statute is a change from previous years where the Election Board would not adjourn until after all votes were counted. The change means that even if not all votes are counted on election night by 11:00 p.m., the County Clerk and all election workers must adjourn for the day and continue to count the next day at 9:30 a.m.

“With new legislation comes changes that we want voters to be aware of.  Please know that when you are waiting for election results, there are hundreds of community members that are working hard to get those results to you as quickly as possible, while always prioritizing adhering to the law and processes that protect the integrity of our elections. We appreciate our media partners in assisting us in offering clear and accurate information,” said Doña Ana County Clerk, Dr. Amanda López Askin.

Election Day for the 2023 Regular Local Election is on November 7, 2023. Forty-two Voting Convenience Centers will be available for Doña Ana County voters to cast their ballot from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Nine secured container locations are also available for absentee ballot drop-off.

Completed absentee ballots must be received by the Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.

NMC 2023-2025 Officer Election Results– Doña Ana County

The New Mexico Counties Officer Election took place on Thursday, April 27th, and Friday, April 28th, 2023, at the Doña Ana County Clerk’s office. This special election was held to elect the 2023-2025 Doña Ana County Officer and Board Member of New Mexico Counties. 

Pursuant to the New Mexico Counties bylaws, the Doña Ana County Clerk and their office are responsible for conducting the New Mexico Counties Officer Election. The County Assessor, County Clerk, County Probate Judge, County Sheriff, County Treasurer, and all five County Commissioners holding office in 2023 were eligible for election and eligible to vote in the special election. 

The Bureau of Elections Supervisor, Elections Staff Coordinator, and Chief Deputy Clerk oversaw the election and completed the canvassing of the election on Monday, May 1st at 9:00 am. Seven votes were tallied, and Doña Ana County Clerk Amanda López Askin was elected as the New Mexico Counties Officer for Doña Ana County. Per the bylaws, the New Mexico Counties Executive Director, Joy Esparsen, has been notified. Also, the certificate of canvass has been posted publicly on https://www.donaanacounty.org/departments/elected-officials/clerk/public-announcements

The newly elected representative, Amanda López Askin, shall serve a two-year term beginning at the adjournment of the 2023 NMC June Board of Directors meeting until the adjournment of the 2025 NMC June Annual Conference.

On April 3rd, 2023, the New Mexico Counties notified the Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office of the need to hold an election to select the 2023-2025 board of director representative for Doña Ana County.

Pursuant to the NMC bylaws, the Doña Ana County Clerk is responsible for conducting the election. The County Assessor, County Clerk, County Probate Judge, County Sheriff, County Treasurer, and all five County Commissioners holding office in 2023 are eligible for election to membership on New Mexico Counties’ board and may vote in the election.

The NMC Board of Directors amended this year’s election timeline to coincide with the June Board of Directors meeting. Therefore, county elected officials must elect one elected official to represent the county by Monday,
May 1st, 2023.

Important Dates/Timeline:

  • Candidates shall notify the Chief Deputy Clerk of their candidacy in writing no later than Wednesday, April 26th, 2023 by emailing carolinez@donaanacounty.org
  • The New Mexico Counties - Doña Ana County election will take place on Thursday, April 27th, and Friday, April 28th, 2023. Elected officials may cast a ballot in person at the clerk’s office conference room between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Election information and results will be available online at https://www.donaanacounty.org/departments/elected-officials/clerk/public-announcements.
  • The Bureau of Elections Supervisor, Elections Staff Coordinator, and Chief Deputy Clerk will canvass the election on Monday, May 1st, at 9:00 am in multi-purpose room 111 of the DAC Government Center. This meeting is open to the public.
  • The County Clerk will notify NMC Executive Director, Joy Esparsen, of the newly elected representative in writing by Monday, May 1st (45 days prior to the June Board of Directors meeting).
  • The newly elected representative shall serve a two-year term beginning at the adjournment of the 2023 NMC June Board of Directors meeting until the adjournment of the 2025 NMC June Annual Conference.
