Emergency Notifications
When an incident occurs that endangers lives, the incident commander might request an emergency notification be sent out to people in the danger area. Previously, this required people to register for alerts. Now, both the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority and the Office of Emergency Management are moving forward with use of the IPAWS - Integrated Public Alert & Warning System. This allows for notifications to be sent to every single cell phone in the designated area, as well as potential activation of other broadcasts. Best of all, it doesn't require people to register in advance. You might have received a specific type of IPAWS alert in the past - the Amber Alert that is sent when a child is missing and endangered. Use of the IPAWS system in our area will continue to increase.
